Plex is brilliant for organising your own music, audiobooks, and podcasts in one place, but Sonos has never offered a proper Plex music integration for everyone. The good news: if Plex plays in your browser, you can send that audio to any Sonos speaker. With the free Cast to Sonos Chrome extension you cast the audio from your Plex web player straight to your Sonos system, no extra apps or workarounds.

What you'll need

  • Google Chrome (or any Chromium browser like Edge, Brave, or Vivaldi)
  • A Plex account with access to your library at app.plex.tv
  • A Sonos speaker on the same network

Step-by-step: Play Plex on Sonos

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with Plexamp?

Plexamp is a separate dedicated app, so Cast to Sonos can't capture its audio. Use the Plex web player at app.plex.tv in Chrome instead, anything that plays in that browser tab can be cast to Sonos.

Can I play my own local Plex music library?

Yes. Cast to Sonos streams whatever audio is playing in the browser tab, so your personal Plex music library, audiobooks, and podcasts all work.

Is there any audio delay?

Like Chromecast, Sonos buffers the incoming stream so there is a slight delay. For music this is unnoticeable, and Cast to Sonos automatically syncs video so it stays matched when you watch.

Is Cast to Sonos free?

Yes. The free tier streams in mono with no account required. Premium unlocks HD stereo audio and multi-room groups.
