Connecting to a Sonos speaker is two things: getting the speaker onto your network (a one-time setup in the Sonos app), and then playing audio to it from whatever device you like. This guide covers both — including how to play anything from your computer once it's connected, using the free Cast to Sonos extension.

What you'll need
- A Sonos speaker, powered on
- The Sonos app (on your phone or computer)
- Your home Wi-Fi network and password
Step 1: Power on the speaker and open the Sonos app
Plug in your Sonos speaker and open the Sonos app on your phone or computer. If you don't have it yet, download it first.
Step 2: Add the speaker in the app
Choose Add Product (or Set up a new system) and follow the prompts so the app can find your speaker.
Step 3: Connect it to your Wi-Fi
Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password so the speaker joins the same network as your phone or computer.
Step 4: Assign a room and test it
Give the speaker a room name and play a test sound to confirm it's connected and audible.
Now connect your computer to play anything
Setup gets your speaker on the network — but the Sonos app only plays the services it supports. To play any audio from your computer (YouTube, podcasts, radio, web players), connect your browser with Cast to Sonos:
- Install the Cast to Sonos extension and pin it.
- Open the tab you want to hear and click the extension.
- Pick your newly connected Sonos speaker and press play.
There's nothing to pair — the extension finds your Sonos on the same network.

Frequently asked questions
How do I connect a new Sonos speaker?
Plug it in, open the Sonos app, choose Add Product, and follow the prompts to join it to your Wi-Fi. Once it's on your network and assigned to a room, it's ready to play audio.
Can I connect to a Sonos speaker without the Sonos app?
You need the Sonos app for the initial setup (joining it to Wi-Fi). After that, you can play audio to it from other tools without the app open — for example, casting any browser tab from your computer with the free Cast to Sonos extension.
How do I connect my computer to play audio on Sonos?
Once the speaker is on your network, install the Cast to Sonos Chrome extension, open the audio you want, click the extension, pick your speaker, and press play. There's nothing to pair — it finds your Sonos on the network.
Why won't my Sonos speaker connect?
Most connection issues come down to the network: make sure the speaker and your phone or computer are on the same Wi-Fi, the speaker has power, and your router isn't isolating devices. Restarting the speaker and router resolves most problems.
