Let's be straight with you: the Cast to Sonos Chrome extension does not run on Android today. Chrome for Android doesn't support extensions at all, and the tab audio-capture features the extension depends on simply aren't available on mobile browsers. We'd rather tell you that honestly than have you install something that won't work.
Here's an honest rundown of what actually works for getting audio to Sonos from a phone, and how to be first to know when Android casting becomes possible.
What works for Sonos on mobile today
- The official Sonos app, For any service Sonos supports natively (and there are many), the Sonos app on Android is the most reliable way to play and control music on your speakers.
- AirPlay from Apple devices, If you also have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, AirPlay 2 can stream to compatible Sonos speakers. This is an Apple-only feature, so it doesn't apply to Android itself.
- A computer with Cast to Sonos, If your goal is to cast browser audio (YouTube, radio, podcasts, web players) that Sonos doesn't natively support, a Windows, Mac, Linux, or ChromeOS computer running Cast to Sonos does exactly that today.
Why Android is harder than desktop
On desktop, Cast to Sonos captures the audio from a browser tab and streams it to your speakers. Mobile browsers don't expose that capability, and Android Chrome has no extension platform, so the same approach simply can't run on a phone yet. It's not a quick toggle; it needs a genuinely different approach, which is what we're investigating.
